Bring Home Stories: Tiffinware

Christine Pemberton

"First take a little girl born in Pune, whose earliest memories are of colourful flowers. (More anon).

Add a childhood spent in Africa, followed by design college in England. Watch her get married and return to India.

And then sit back and enjoy the pot-pourri of cross cultural design that is Risham Chawla and her Tiffinware company.

And what better place to start than with the iconic Indian tiffin carrier? With a distinctive Tiffinware twist."

Project Mohawk

My enamelled Tiffinware was identified by the HRH Princess Reema Bint Bandar Al Saud for the Harvey Nichols Riyadh Ramandan Caravan from India. I was one of only 80 Indian designers whose work was chosen, I am extremely honoured and pretty amazed - yaaay!!

Masala Chai by Pavitra Mohan

Last year, around this time, I received a phone call to curate the ‘Urban Contemporary' segment of an Indian themed  (The Caravan) festival that luxury store Harvey Nichols, Riyadh, was to host.
It was such a rush to be asked to associate with a brand like Harvey Nichols as they have the world’s most prestigious brands under their roof.
The process took a while, as the exhibition was in Saudi Arabia, that meant a lot of restrictions and limitations on to what could be displayed.
The Urban contemporary segment was essentially emerging and upcoming, fashion, accessory and home decor brands.
While in my experience with MASALA CHAI, Read more I’ve come across 100’s of independent brands, it was a challenge to curate something for the Arab market, which had to be contemporary but also have a very distinct Indian flavour to them. And let’s not forget, it was at Harvey Nichols in Riyadh, so a touch of luxe was essential too.
Aesthetically, they had to have a crossover appeal to the expats and Indian diaspora of Riyadh , as well as appeal to the local Arabs. No products with images of people, dogs or pigs were allowed. So on and so forth.
Contacting and communicating with over 40 brands was whittled down to 25 brands and further edited to 10 brands, that met all their requirements.
I present to you the final cut in three parts according to categories.
In home decor we first have Tiffinware: they grew from a small set of silver condiment spoons embellished with semi-precious stones designed for the V&A Museum Shop. I love Risham Chawla’s wonderfully colourful pieces.

Gorgeous Giftware

Offering a vibrant alternative to everyday items, Tiffinware is a fantastic, design led company creating unique, handmade products, designed by British-Indian designer Risham Chawla. With a range of large and small, gorgeously colourful pieces, the company offers a great selection of giftware.

Daily Apple Blog February 2014

You will never be without lunchbox again!

A Lunch box or Tiffin, is a typical accessory in India, and the major character in Risham Chawla's new item in the collection of Tiffinware brand. A bit of "retro", colorful, and really useful to keep everything in place, to serve appetizers or a picnic, the Tiffins are also wonderful to showcase in a lunch cabinet. In fact in the West we don't normally carry lunch with us, but still, they are so gorgeous that we can't stay without.

Risham is a British, Indian designer, spreads her energies all around with a volcanic energy. Read more She has grown up traveling in Africa, UK and India. Her father, a renowned botanical expert, has been working in the most enchanting gardens in the world, and that is the environment in which Risham discovered and nurtured her creativity. Now based in Delhi, but often traveling to London where her mother and her daughters still live, says: "I love hand made, and I try to help and sustain artisans. In this moment this is a suffering sector".

Her enameled products have driven English Stylists crazy. They are the result of long research on the application of enamel on steel. Color is a recurrent motif in her creations. I've always loved "the bush" (the African jungle), gardens, nature even more than flowers. Tropical gardens in India and Africa have been fascinating to me; their colors are incredible, and I am never done with looking at them. Here I find my inspiration, and this is also why I love roundish organic shapes. Risham is a flooding river, while talking about her future projects. "I will expand my enameled collection, and I am also experimenting printing, from which I will hopefully start a new collection. I've also launched a resin collection of jewels, with insertion of traditional laces".

Risham loves Italy, and knows well Tuscany. She used to travel often to Rome accompanying her father. "I would love to launch my collections to your country, she says. It would be a good excuse to visit!!”
